1) What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO is the practice of including targeted keywords in the content of your website and submitting relevant content and links to your website to highly ranked information sources on the Internet.  The goal of SEO is to get your site to rank highly on search engines when users search for your targeted keywords.

2) What are Organic or Natural Search?

When your site’s listing appears in the search engine results pages (SERPs) without the need to pay for a sponsored listing or sneaky black hat tricks.  Natural, or organic search engine rankings are based on the content and relevance of your website, so they are more likely to be taken seriously by readers.

3) Why is it so important to use White Hat Optimization techniques?

Google requires that every website they index uses ethical or white hat, SEO techniques.  This means they cannot use illegal black hat tactics that attempt to fool the search engines. While some SEO firms still try to use black hat SEO techniques, the search engines may penalize these sites by permanently banning them from search results and directories.  Yoobly only uses White Hat optimization, so there is no need to worry.

4) What is Black Hat SEO?

Black Hat SEO is a practice that includes hiding text beneath a white background so it is only visible to the search engine spiders.  This tactic, which is known as cloaking can result in harsh penalties from major search engines.

5) Why isn’t my website appearing in the search engines?

If your site is not showing up, there could be a number of different reasons. You may not be using a web design that is optimized for search engines. Perhaps your designer relied heavily on multimedia platforms like Flash, which does not translate into readable text for search engines. Your site could be missing critical information that is preventing search engines from indexing it properly.Certain scripts can also prevent the spiders from crawling your website and scanning its content. If your site has been mistakenly submitted to the search engines several times, it may be seen as spam.Your site could have been banned or temporarily penalized for a black hat SEO trick.

6) Do search engines still read Meta tags?

There is much disagreement between SEO firms about whether Meta tags are still important, and how much weight they deserve in the grand scheme of things.  We always include Meta tags because there is no way they can harm a site’s rankings, but we never attempt to stuff them with keywords that are not on the page already.
